The mother church of Christianity is probably a church in Jerusalem called the Holy Sepulcher in whose walls Christians
believe Jesus was crucified buried and rose from the dead. There the priests descend into an underground
chamber that was Jesus’ tomb and emerge with a flaming torch. Seconds later the church is filled with
thousands of blazing candles and some of those candles are flown by airplane to
Athens and other cities.
In Maysville, we live about
2000 miles from Jerusalem and we live about 2000 years after Christ. But God knows no barriers of space and time.
The resurrection knows no barriers of space and time. We have made the Easter Fire, The light of
our Easter candles illumines the darkness.
Where ever people live in darkness, the great light of Easter will
shine. When ever death tries to strangle
humanity, the Easter fire will burn and Christians will proclaim, Christ is
risen, alleluia! When ever despair weighs us down, we will trample down death and
we will sing: Thanks we to God alleluia! Alleluia!
We are afraid of
miracles. We are afraid of miracles
because we fear being changed. But
greater miracles than the burning bush happen here in Maysville. Greater miracles than the parting of the Red Sea happen in Maysville Kentucky. Greater
miracles have happened and will happen if we have the courage of our faith and
pass the Easter light we have received tonight to our friends and family.
